the new pope led by the cardinals of the procession, and back into the square where he gi received his vestments and papal ring. dignitaries across the globe and hundreds of thousands joined in the celebratory service. in the same casual style that has defined the early days of his papacy, francis spoke at times without notes, his message focused on the tenets of the catholic faith. he said those in responsibility, are called to be protectors. he spoke several times about the need to careful, protect and watch over one another. 500 priests helped serve communion in the square. and as the mass ended, pope francis moved back to the simple altar inside the basilica, the

back to you. >> it is 4:35 right now. one man is dead this morning after police say he tried to run over an officer with his car. this all happened on jerlin drive in an unincorporated area of san jose. three police officers tried to pull over a stolen car. that driver reportedly refused to stop. he instead rammed the back of a police car. police say the suspect tried to run him over. that's when the officer fired the deadly shot. >> two, quick shots. pop, pop. and that's when all the fire department and all the rest of the cops showed up. >> that suspect died at the hospital. police say another person was in that stolen car and is right now being questioned as a witness. no officers were hurt. 4:35. we're learning new details about a raceway crash that killed a 14-year-old boy last weekend. marcus johnson died when his

17-year-old cousin lost control of his car and crashed into the pit area. the johnson family now says chase told them the steering wheel came loose as he entered the turn, causing the crash. the family says the car was new. chase johnson was driving warm-up for a competition when it crashed. the man accused of killing a san francisco newspaper vendor could be in court as early as today. police have arrested 36-year-old mark castle. they say castle picked up 77-year-old dallas ayers and dropped him on the pavement near market. ayers suffered a hip injury and died three weeks later. he was well-known in the area where he sold "the chronicle" for the past 30 years. most recently at the montgomery state bar station. castle is believed to be a transient. a judge is questioning whether a man accused of stealing a yacht from a harbor

is competent to stand trial. a court hearing will be held today to appoint drivers to determine if he can stand trial. he is charged with grand theft for stealing the sailboat and running it into the ground earlier this month. he's being held in jail on $1 million bail. it was a shocking discovery where a giant sinkhole swallowed up a man's -- he had two man-made ponds in his back yard. one of them was completely gone. he said it took about four to five hours for the whole thing to drain. he says that's pretty amazing considering he once drained that pond with a pump and it took him seven days to get all the water out. that man is trying to figure out what caused the sinkhole. 4:37. contra costa county taking its ban on smoking to a new level. supervisors will introduce an

ordnance that would ban electronic cigarettes. it would require businesses that sell electronic cigarettes to have a tobacco retailers license. discussion starts at 9:00 at board chambers. and tonight, palo alto will consider a ban on smoking at three local parks. the ban would affect the plazas in downtown. and sarah wallace park on california avenue. it's 4:38. we're keeping the eyes on the skies. and today, it's going to be sprinkling out there. >> feeling great on a tuesday. temperatures this morning in the 50s. a couple 40s out there. we're headed towards the upper 60s, low 70s, with rain on the way. so, getting closer to spring. and that officially arrived tomorrow at 4:19. 49 in livermore to start the day. let's talk about the rain. area of low pressure moves to the north. like the tail end to the bay

welcome back, everyone. and a good tuesday morning to you. what a beautiful live look outside at the gorgeous bay bridge this morning. terrific's crawling across. not just because it backed up. people are easing into their tuesday morning. it's 4:44. santa clara ready to pull out the stops to bring super bowl 50 to the bay area. the city council will hold a meeting to vote on several resolutions that will meet the nfl financial commands to win the 2016 event. among them, waiving a city hotel tax for employees and teams. and two ticket surcharges on the super bowl and dropping added parking fees. the concessions add up to millions. but officials say the costs will be more than offset by the income and the publicity generated by such a big game.

>> that would be quite the bash. in other news, the hacker who stole personal information from new york mayor michael bloomberg and news star, diane sawyer, getting time behind bars. and the question remains, will wall street react to all the news from greece. for that, we go live to cnbc headquarters. >> good morning. thank you for that. stock futures are pointing to a higher open on tuesday. the dow and s&p 500 are trying to avoid the first three-day losing streak of the year. concerns about european instability, which weighed on markets monday, don't appear to be consuming interest today. we'll have to watch out for that. and here's another story that we are watching. a computer hacker that broke into about 120,000 apple ipads and stole the personal information of their owners has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. some of the victims were

well-known figures including michael bloomberg, abc news anchor, diane sawyer. the hacker claims the motive was to make the internet more secure. but a jury didn't buy it when they found him guilty in november. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you very much. back to you and right straight over to christina. activity in the weather department. >> i thought we were doing a little dance there. >> we can do that. >> he has more rhythm than i ever will have. temperatures this morning are looking good at 4:46. it's nice and crisp out there to start. we have plenty of 40s and 50s. not too cold at all. 50 in san jose. 44 in gilroy. and 48 degrees in santa cruz. our area of low pressure, rain returns tonight, as we head throughout the bay area. this is what we're expecting. 6:00 p.m. tuesday, widespread rain from san jose to santa rosa. that's when the main event starts to move in. we're getting more rain. tomorrow morning, expecting from today. and overall, not expecting a

whole lot. maybe half an inch in the south bay. throughout the boy today, mostly dry conditions until the evening commute. here's more activity in the north at midnight. through tomorrow morning, 8:00 a.m., wet commute on the way. the rain is great for our pollen level. and great for our spring growth, which is certainly taking place out there. 10:00 p.m. wednesday, start to clear you out. and like i said, maybe six inches. maybe a foot of fresh powder up in tahoe. six to eight inches above 6,500 feet. at this point, we'll take what we can get. 67 in fremont. 67 degrees in san jose. holding on to warm weather. tomorrow, the low 60s return. and thursday and friday, things get better with a few showers early thursday. clearing out just in time for the weekend. ramping the numbers back up to the 70s. new this morning, more trouble for japan's dangered fukushima power plant.

the tokyo electric company says four pools have been without fresh cooling water for almost a day. the company is working to fix the problem. it says pool temperatures are well within safe levels. the pools can reportedly go without fresh water for at least four days. but the company is working on backup systems just in case. the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 destroyed the plant's cooling system, causing three reactor cores to melt. and those pools to overheat. new this morning, more than 20 people killed in baghdad, as the u.s. marks ten years since the beginning of the war in iraq. a wave of car bombings, killing at least 21 people and wounding 80 others. and there's still a curfew in baghdad, ten years after the u.s. waged war on iraq, to remove saddam hussein from power. a democracy has been formed there. but a decade later, politicians still divided on whether or not it was worth the cost.

jordan on this trip. prior to leaving the white house, president obama will meet with the leaders of northern ireland. there's more to be cleaned up, more than crews first expected after a bridge demolition down in texas last night. that's called rocking the house. crowds cheering, watching the lakeside park, not knowing that that blast to tear down the lake marble bridge that was no longer used. it also destroyed a verizon fiber optic cable, killing their cell phone, internet and tv stations. it went to black in bridge debris. the good news, it will be cleaned up today. restoring the fiber optic line will take a little bit longer. >> what? >> yeah. it's called pulling the plug. >> somebody's mad, yeah. san jose is getting ready to host the ncaa tournament.

nbc bay area. that is the heart, the pulse, the lifeline of this show. we want to say thank you very much to everybody in there for making this run like a well-oiled machine. it is 4:54 right now. the h.p. pavilion, that's right, hammer time. getting ready for some march madness. the basketball court, now in place and getting all shined up for thursday's slate of games. cal and syracuse, among the high-profile teams playing in san jose at the h.p. the ncaa tournament, one of the biggest events in sports. that means big-time business for local restaurants and hotels. before the tournament gets under way, the final teams that need to play their way in go off tonight. >> here we go. tonight, who? >> st. mary's, the gaels. >> my gaels are vowing for a spot in the big dance. the gaels already in dayton, getting ready to take on middle

they're traveling south, counter to traffic flow. they're picking up the cones and moving the road crews from the area north of hyde street. that's a distraction. and we'll show you on the map, approaching the area from the north. 980 towards high street, a similar situation with the crews moving the cones away from the road. we should have a smoother flow in the next half hour. right now, it is slowing because of the crews. heading towards the bridge, no problems. a live look shows you a nice flow of traffic. boaters came within several feet of two adult whales this past sunday afternoon. >> touching the boat. >> kind of pushing them around. don't need that motor. the whales gently slided through the water. nice way to put it. even spraying them with a little bit of water. >> we freshing. >> that's amazing how close.

cardinals and officials that have come to the inauguration. the vatican said, actually 150,000 to 200,000 people attended that ceremony. in his homily, pope francis urged the world to protect the environment and the poor. he was interrupted by applause several times. more than 130 official delegations from governments and religious organizations around the world attended the historic event. among them, u.s. vice president joseph biden. coming up at 5:30, we'll take you live to the vatican again, for a special report on the day's events. and closer to home. one san francisco city supervisor inducing a measure, keeping anti-abortion protesters from standing directly in front of planned parenthood clinics. christy smith is live in san francisco, with the controversial proposal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, a spokesperson for planned parenthood says it's getting scary for their clients. sometimes they leave crying.
